The interest in Chinese Art among US collectors and academia can be traced back to 1961, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art launched their blockbuster show, Chinese Art Treasures: A Selection from the National Palace Museum, in collaboration with the National Palace Museum of Taipei. This exhibition introduced a generation of American art historians to the study of Chinese Art. Most especially, to the study of Chinese literati paintings, which led to the golden period of Chinese Art research and collection in the 1980s and 1990s.
Next week, China Guardian auction house is offering an important collection of Classical Chinese paintings and calligraphy from a major player of this golden period. The consignor is a major contributor of Chinese Art to museums in the United States, and sponsors Chinese Art research programs across the country.
